JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Starter is responsible for the safety of Jockeys and horses during the process of loading into and breaking from starting gate. During morning workouts, the Assistant Starter also schools young horses on how to safely load, stand, and break from the starting gate.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Essential Job Functions:

Must be able to work closely and comfortably around racehorses Leads horses into individual stalls Keeps horse’s head straight prior to break Safely loads racehorses into proper stall Safeguards the starting gate trigger mechanism Changes/Moves numbers located above each stall on starting gate Records and documents troublesome horses Schools horses during morning workouts

DEMANDS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Must be able to work independently. Must be able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time (4 hours). Must be able to respond calmly and make rational decisions when handling employee conflicts. Must be able to maneuver throughout all areas of the property and from floor to floor either by stairways (minimum of 20 steps) or escalator. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; and, have the ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop and kneel.  Respond to visual and aural cues.  Must have the manual dexterity to operate a computer and other necessary office equipment.  Must be able to tolerate areas containing dust, loud noises and bright lights. Must be able to work varied shifts, weekends and holidays as needed. Ability to simultaneously manage several projects, and not be frustrated by changing priorities and unforeseen obstacles to achieving objectives.  Ability to speak distinctly and persuasively.  Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English 

REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma/GED or related work experience preferred. Must have basic knowledge of applicable Ohio Revised Code and Administrative Rules outlined in Chapter 3769 Must have extensive experience working closely around racehorses

Must be 21 years of age. Must be able to obtain a License from the Ohio State Racing Commission Must be able to work quickly and efficiently in tight spaces Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Must have strong organizational skills Must be team-oriented Must be able to work successfully with a variety of personality styles Must be able to perform various functions essential to racing operations
